Heating and air conditioning in Superior, CO

Superior went from a coal town of about 250 people to a community of more than 13,000, most of it built since the 1990s. Then the Marshall Fire took hundreds of homes. We work on the 1990s systems and the new rebuilds alike.

Superior was founded in 1896 and named for the quality of its coal. Its population hovered around 250 until the 1990s, when Rock Creek Ranch, Sagamore and other subdivisions were built along the US 36 corridor between Boulder and Denver.

Today we repair and replace furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps and water heaters all over town, with the same family service and posted prices we offer everywhere.

Rock Creek Ranch, the town’s largest residential development, and the other 1990s neighborhoods are now at the age where original furnaces and air conditioners wear out, if they have not been replaced already. Most gas furnaces last somewhere around 15 to 20 years and most central air conditioners around 12 to 15, depending on how they were installed and cared for.

The Marshall Fire on December 30, 2021 destroyed 378 homes in Superior, according to Boulder County, including the Sagamore neighborhood. By early 2023, about 70 percent of the roughly 200 rebuild permits in town met the 2021 energy code or better, so many rebuilt homes have high-efficiency furnaces or heat pumps and tighter construction. Those systems run best with clean filters and a yearly inspection.

Superior adopted a Beneficial Electrification Plan in 2023. If you are weighing a heat pump, we are happy to talk it through and price it next to a furnace.

Superior permits, utilities and rebates

The Town of Superior requires a permit for air conditioners, furnaces and heat pumps, and for water heater installs. The Building Department is run by SAFEbuilt. Since October 13, 2025, contractors also need a Town of Superior contractor license. If you are comparing quotes, ask whether the permit is included.

Xcel Energy is Superior’s electric utility. The town’s energy page lists Boulder County EnergySmart rebates for heat pumps and heat pump water heaters, Xcel rebates and Home Energy Squad visits, and the Colorado RENU loan. Amounts change, so check the program or ask us when we write your estimate.
