Heating and air conditioning in Arvada, CO

Arvada boomed after World War II, from about 1,500 people in 1945 to nearly 50,000 by 1970. Those postwar homes and the historic houses around Olde Town keep us busy with furnaces, boilers and swamp coolers.

Arvada is one of the larger cities we serve, about 124,000 people across Jefferson and Adams counties at the 2020 census. It was platted in 1870, incorporated in 1904 and became a city in 1951, just as the postwar building boom took off.

We repair and replace furnaces, air conditioners, boilers, water heaters and swamp coolers all over Arvada, with the same family service and posted prices we offer everywhere.

What we see in Arvada homes

Arvada, Colorado

Arvada had about 1,500 residents when World War II ended. Then the houses came: in the late 1940s and 1950s, whole neighborhoods went up north of Ralston Road between Carr and Independence streets, and the city grew to about 19,000 by 1960 and nearly 50,000 by 1970.

Postwar homes like these are often on their third or fourth furnace, with ductwork that was never sized for central air and a lot of swamp coolers still on the roof. Most gas furnaces last somewhere around 15 to 20 years and most central air conditioners around 12 to 15, depending on how they were installed and cared for. It is common to find a furnace and an air conditioner of very different ages sharing the same tired ductwork.

Closer to downtown, the historic neighborhoods around Olde Town, Reno Park and the Stocke-Walter addition from the early 1900s, can have boilers, older gas furnaces and water heaters in tight basements.

Arvada permits, utilities and rebates

Arvada requires a permit before work starts for both replacements and new installs. Furnaces and air conditioners need a residential mechanical permit, water heaters and boilers a residential plumbing permit, and evaporative coolers can go under either. Permits come from the Arvada Building Safety Division through a portal open only to contractors with an active City of Arvada license. If you are comparing quotes, ask whether the permit is included.

Xcel Energy provides Arvada’s electricity and natural gas. Arvada’s Energy Action Plan page points residents to Xcel Energy rebates. Xcel’s list of eligible equipment and amounts changes through the year (its 2026 rebates focus on heat pumps), so check the program or our rebates page.

Questions from Arvada homeowners

Do I need a permit to replace a furnace or water heater in Arvada?

Yes. Arvada requires permits for replacements and new installs before work starts: mechanical for furnaces and AC, plumbing for water heaters and boilers. Only contractors with a City of Arvada license can pull them.

Do you work on swamp coolers in Arvada?

Yes. We start them up in spring, winterize them in fall and repair them. Start-up and winterizing are $229 each.

My Arvada home is from the 1950s. Is it worth adding central air?

Often, but it depends on the ductwork. Many postwar homes have ducts sized only for heat. We will look at what you have and give you a free estimate on the options, including a heat pump.

What does a service call cost in Arvada?

The same as everywhere we work. Repairs start with an $89 trip and diagnostic fee, waived if you go ahead with the repair.
