Heating and air conditioning in Louisville, CO

Louisville borders Lafayette to the southwest, so we are close by. Most Louisville homes went up in the 1980s and 1990s, and hundreds were rebuilt after the Marshall Fire. We know both.

Louisville is one of our closest neighbors. Like Lafayette, it started as a coal town, Louisville in 1877 with the Welch Mine, and became a suburban community after the mines closed in the 1950s.

We repair and replace furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps and water heaters all over town, for families in Old Town homes, 1980s and 90s neighborhoods and brand new rebuilds alike.

What we see in Louisville homes

Fall color over Louisville neighborhoods
Louisville, Colorado

Louisville grew fast after 1970, from about 2,400 people to more than 12,000 by 1990. A 2013 city market study, using Census data, found about 35 percent of the city’s homes were built in the 1980s and another 30 percent in the 1990s. Plenty of those homes are still running original or second-generation furnaces and air conditioners. Most gas furnaces last somewhere around 15 to 20 years and most central air conditioners around 12 to 15, depending on how they were installed and cared for.

The Marshall Fire on December 30, 2021 destroyed 550 homes in Louisville, according to Boulder County, and by August 2026 the city reported that 532 of them had been rebuilt or had started rebuilding. Most rebuilds were permitted to the 2021 energy code or better, so they tend to have tight, efficient construction, high-efficiency furnaces or heat pumps, and ventilation systems that need regular filter changes and care.

In Old Town, the historic core, we find older homes with furnaces and water heaters squeezed into small spaces, and the occasional boiler.

Louisville permits, utilities and rebates

Louisville has its own furnace, AC, water heater and heat pump permit. A furnace or AC needs a contractor with a mechanical license, a water heater or boiler a plumbing license, and a heat pump both mechanical and electrical. High-efficiency direct-vent appliances need a vent pressure test, and every permit gets a final inspection. Contractors also need a City of Louisville contractor license.

Xcel Energy provides Louisville’s electricity and gas. For heat pumps and heat pump water heaters, Boulder County’s EnergySmart program offers rebates and advising, and the county notes Louisville residents may qualify for additional city rebates. Amounts change, so check the program or our rebates page.
