Air conditioner not working

AC not cooling? We can fix that.

Warm air from the vents, ice on the lines, or an outdoor unit that will not start. Here is what to check first, and what we do when we get there.

Check these first

  1. Thermostat

Set it to COOL, a few degrees below room temperature, with the fan on AUTO. Replace the batteries if the screen is dim.

  2. Filter

A clogged filter is the number one reason an AC freezes up and stops cooling. Replace it if you cannot see light through it.

  3. Breakers and the outdoor disconnect

Your AC usually has two breakers, one for the indoor fan and one for the outdoor unit, plus a shutoff box on the wall by the condenser. Make sure none of them is off.

  4. The outdoor unit

With the system calling for cooling, the big fan on top should be spinning. Clear away leaves, grass clippings and anything stacked within two feet of it.

  5. Ice

If you see ice on the copper lines or the indoor coil, turn cooling off and run the fan only until it melts. Then call us.

Hear buzzing from the outdoor unit with the fan not turning? Turn the system off at the thermostat. A compressor trying to start against a failed capacitor can overheat and damage itself.

What we check

  • Capacitor and contactor, the inexpensive parts behind most no-start calls
  • Refrigerant charge, and if it is low, where the leak is
  • Outdoor and indoor coils for dirt, damage and ice
  • Condensate drain and pump, so the system is not shutting itself off on a full drain pan
  • Blower, airflow and duct connections
  • Thermostat wiring and placement

We explain what we found in plain language and give you the price before any work starts. If your system is near the end of its life we will tell you that too, and give you a free estimate on a replacement so you can compare.

Already know you want a new system? See air conditioning repair and installation for what goes into a good install, compare swamp and evaporative coolers, or look at a heat pump that cools in summer and heats in winter. And a spring AC inspection catches most of these problems before the first hot day.

Questions we hear a lot

Why is my AC running but not cooling?

The most common causes are a dirty filter, a dirty outdoor coil, low refrigerant from a leak, a failed capacitor that keeps the outdoor fan or compressor from starting, or a frozen indoor coil. If the outdoor unit is silent while the indoor fan runs, the capacitor or contactor is a strong suspect.

My AC has ice on it. What should I do?

Turn the cooling off and run the fan alone so the ice melts, which can take a few hours. Check the filter. Ice usually means poor airflow or low refrigerant. If it freezes again after the filter is changed, call us.

What does an AC repair visit cost?

AC repair starts with an $89 trip and diagnostic fee, and we waive it if you go ahead with the repair. The repair price depends on what we find, and we tell you before we do any work.

Can you add refrigerant?

Yes, we do refrigerant recharges. But refrigerant does not get used up. If it is low there is a leak, and we will tell you where it is and whether fixing it makes more sense than topping it off.

Do you work on swamp coolers too?

Yes. We sell, service, start up and winterize evaporative coolers.
