Now that summer is here Aspen Heating and Air Conditioning wants you to know five things about A/C maintenance. It’s necessary to do proper maintenance to your AC system for it to run efficiently and here’s how:
Change Filter
Changing the filter is one of the most important and easiest ways to keep your AC system operating properly. Air conditioning units need a steady flow of air to function properly. The purpose of the air filter is to keep the air clear of dust and debris. If your filter is clogged, it causes the AC unit to struggle. Changing the filter once a month will improve the efficiency and air quality within your home. If you have a washable filter, only clean it once a month during the warm season.
Clean Vents
Your home’s air vents can become laden with debris and dust. For your air conditioning system to operate properly, there must be air flow in and out of the cooling system. Dust can clog your filter and cause the AC to struggle. Once a season it’s important to vacuum with the hose to clear away the dust and debris.
It’s also important to keep your outside unit free from weeds and other debris. Just like the indoor vents, the outdoor unit needs air flow to function properly. Anything blocking your unit should be taken away, and your unit should be checked on a regular basis. It is recommended to have approximately 24 inches of clear space in all directions so get rid of tall grass, shrubs, hanging branches or leaves.
Fix Leaks
If you have a leak, you can lose up to 30 percent of the airflow. To find out if you have a leak you can use what is called the “smoke trick” in which you light a stick and hold it near the duct connections. If you see the smoke blowing around, you have a leak.
Programmable Thermostat
A programmable thermostat is a convenient way to maximize your comfort and energy savings. They allow you to set cooler temperatures when you are home and warmer temps when you are away.
Annual Service
Finally, the most important thing to know about A/C maintenance is to have annual service done by a licensed HVAC professional. Like any type machinery, your AC unit can require service and tune-ups to run efficiently. The licensed professionals at Aspen Heating and Air Conditioning provide maintenance service that goes beyond cleaning the filters. They will check the refrigerant levels, cleaning and inspection of coils, check fan belts and much more to ensure your system is operating properly.
Heating and cooling systems account for over half of your energy costs. A properly working system will not only keep you comfortable but will provide energy efficiency too. With proper maintenance and service from Aspen Heating and Air Conditioning, you will have many years of comfort.
